Uber Now Working On Flying Taxis

Helicopters, quad copters, or space-age airplanes, all the craft will have to be capable of vertical takeoff and landing, called VTOL, in order to fit into mini-airports, known as vertiports, spread around cities. And they will have to be quiet enough to take off and land near homes and offices without driving people crazy. Local, state, and federal agencies all have to get on board and convince the public that the technology is safe and not too intrusive.  Dubai has already green-lit a program by Chinese drone maker EHang (unconnected to Uber) that will start sky taxi flights in July.

The likely plan in all cities is to locate vertiports on top of buildings.

Uber’s taxis will start service with fully certified commercial pilots, who may be the company’s first full-time drivers.

DarkOverlord Demands Ransom For Unreleased Content From Netflix, Fox and Others

‘TheDarkOverlord stole  next season’s Orange is The New Black content from a third party, and they’re demanding Netflix pay a ransom in order to keep the rest of the season private. Late Friday night, TheDarkOverlord tweeted about content belonging to ABC, FOX, IFC and National Geographic, saying “We’re not playing any games anymore.”

Torrent posted for stolen 'Orange is the New Black' premiere episode

The hackers claim Larson (from Larson studios in Hollywood) agreed to pay up but didn’t, and now they’re trying to squeeze Netflix.  Netflix has said “We are aware of the situation. A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved.”

TheDarkOverlord says that they have released episodes 2-10 of the 13 episode season in another torrent. They also continued to threaten Netflix and the other studios, saying “You’re going to lose a lot more money in all of this than what our modest offer was. We’re quite ashamed to breathe the same air as you. We figured a pragmatic business such as yourselves would see and understand the benefits of cooperating with a reasonable and merciful entity like ourselves. And to the others: there’s still time to save yourselves. Our offer(s) are still on the table – for now.”

Twitch Streamer Gets Swatted Off The Plane

knickers4_001

On Thursday, the relationship between Paul Denino, known as “Ice_Poseidon” online, and his fans got out of hand as he was escorted off of a flight after someone called in a bomb threat in his name. This practice is known as “swatting,” and it’s how malcontents in the gaming community terrorize people they don’t like.

The usual setting for a swatting is someone’s home, so a plane is kind of crazy, although not entirely without precedent. In 2014, Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley tweeted his flight, and trolls quickly tweeted at the airline saying there was a bomb aboard the flight. The plane was grounded in Phoenix.

Google Has Launched In Cuba

Google Credit: Magdalena Petrova

Google servers are now in Cuba and the internet is up and running.

The computers are part of Google’s global network of caching servers, which store frequently requested content locally so it doesn’t have to be accessed over long distances. That speeds up access in any country but is particularly important in a nation like Cuba, which has relatively low connectivity to the rest of the world.Cuba is connected to the rest of the internet almost exclusively via the ALBA-1 submarine cable, which runs from the island to Venezuela. Currently surfing the internet is still very pricey in Cuba. Government-run internet cafes charge several euros for an hour or two of online time — a large amount in a country where the average wage is about 20 euros (US$22) per month.

Research economists Fear Automated, Self-Driving Vehicles Will Have A Negative Impact

Snapshothybrid3_001

Research economists fear that automated, self-driving vehicles will have a negative impact on those that are deeply tied to traditional transportation business models and practices.

There are 1.7 million professional truck drivers in the United States and an additional 1.7 million operators of other commercial land vehicles. Policymakers must prepare for the possible elimination of many of these jobs.

The Center For The Future of Work intends to address the challenge by bringing economic expertise together with some of the world’s leaders in autonomous vehicle technology to forecast where and when these individuals might be displaced from their current jobs. With necessary data, they can begin to design policies that could better improve the dislocation of these workers, and have these policies in place before the disruptions emerge. A Heinz College student team is currently collaborating with the New America Foundation to create the first draft of a map in space and time that forecasts the potentially significant job losses associated with the commercial deployment of these technologies.

On Being Black in the White-Dominated Weed Business

coco5_001

Medical marijuana is currently legal in roughly 28 states (and Washington, D.C.), and recreational use is now legal in eight states—there’s been a wave of entrepreneurs sparking up new streams of income in the marijuana business. But it’s mostly whites who are making a profit from this “green rush.”Outside of the celebrity-endorsed bud brands, there are just a handful of everyday black folk who have been successful in opening up a cannabis company of their own or attaining leadership positions for existing weed businesses.

Read More, According to an investigative report by Buzzfeed, only 1 percent (fewer than three dozen) of the 3,200 to 3,600 marijuana dispensaries in America are black-owned.

Yelp Tests Robots Delivering Food

Snapshotredfur6_001

Snapshotredfur3_001

Robots will hit the streets with food delivery orders from Marble, a San Francisco startup that is partnering with Yelp to navigate crowded city streets and deliver your order before it gets cold.

Marble’s robots are about waist-height, a bit larger than the dog-sized models of its competitor Starship. They’re also brimming with technology borrowed from self-driving cars. Each Marble delivery bot—there are a few of them cruising the streets of San Francisco’s Mission and Potrero Hill neighborhoods—includes lidar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors to monitor their surroundings. The company says it plans to map the majority of San Francisco’s sidewalks over the coming year. Visitors and San Francisco residents can order delivery from Yelp’s Eat24 app for a chance to be served by a Marble bot. If you’re selected, you’ll be offered the opportunity to accept the service, and the restaurant will then pack your order into one of the robots’ cargo bays. Once it arrives, you’ll enter an access code to unlock your breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Last month, Starship also began delivering pizza from Domino’s locations in Germany and the Netherlands. If those trials are successful, Domino’s could expand the service to more of its 2,000+ stores worldwide.

Too Many Cigarette Stores In NYC

Snapshot114_001

There are nearly 9,000 stores selling cigarettes in New York City, according to a new report by the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, which says the city is “oversaturated” with cigarette retailers.

The 8,992 stores licensed to sell tobacco citywide include 2,725 in Brooklyn, 2,196 in Manhattan, 2,117 in Queens, 1,542 in the Bronx, and 412 on Staten Island.

The heaviest concentration of tobacco sellers is in Midtown Manhattan, where there are 62 for every 10,000 people, followed by the Financial District, where there are 25. That compares to a citywide average of 10 stores for every 10,000 people.

Outside Manhattan, the highest rates are in lower-income neighborhoods in the South Bronx and north and central Brooklyn, the report found — the same neighborhoods likely to have higher smoking rates. Hunts Point in the Bronx has 17 stores for every 10,000 people, and Mott Haven and Belmont in the Bronx and Bedford-Stuyvesant and Bushwick in Brooklyn each have 16. A  bill was introduced in the City Council earlier this month to set a cap on the number of tobacco sellers in each neighborhood at half the number now existing, and bar issuing any new licenses until the number of stores has fallen below the cap. Smoking kills about 12,000 people a year in the city, making it the top preventable cause of death.

Gender Pay Gap Via State

pinkfur-3_001

On average, a woman earns 21% less than her male counterpart. That gap can be larger or smaller depending on the state someone lives in. The biggest wage gap in the nation is in Louisiana. 21 states in the country currently have gender pay gaps that are larger than the national average. Washington, D.C. has the smallest pay gap at 10.4%, which means that women earn an average of 10.4% less than men in the area.

Black and Hispanic women are most affected by the wage gap, especially when compared to white men, who make up the largest demographic segment of the workforce, according to the Senate report.

Asian women face the smallest wage gap – they earn 84% of what white men earn, resulting in a pay gap of 16%. White women earn 75% of what white men do, while black women earn 65% and Hispanic women earn 55%.

The only income source through which women age 65 and up make nearly the same as what men over 65 make is Social Security.

Here’s what Newsday had to say

Luxor Esports arena

The Luxor is remodeling its now-defunct nightclub LAX into an esports arena. The goal is to pull in a younger demographic, not as enchanted by traditional slot machines as their parents. (Image: YSW Design and Architecture)
The Luxor has entered into a deal with Allied Esports and Esports Arena to build a dedicated venue for gamers at the now closed LAX nightclub. The 30,000-square-foot space will have a multi-level arena complete with competition stage, LED video wall, telescopic seating, daily gaming stations, a customized food and beverage offering, and a state-of-the-art streaming and television-quality production studio.
Future of Gaming
Esports is expected to grow globally by 20 percent this year, to 258 million, while the industry’s revenues are expected to top $1 billion, according to a February report by New York-based SuperData Research.
Gaming executives continue to search for ways to attract younger patrons to their casinos. The 21-35 demographic has little interest in slot machines or table games and craves something a little more interactive.

Skill-based video games have been popping up in casinos both in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. The machines are similar to Xbox and PS4, that many millenials grew up playing, and this provides a bridge between that entertainment and devices found on the casino floor.

As evidence of its wild fire growth, gamers from across the US recently competed in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,100 on the campus of University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for the chance to win free college tuition, playing in an event called Heroes of the Dorm.
Already one facility has opened in Sin City, making its debut in March in the downtown area. Millennial Esports is the operator of the 15,000-square-foot business that can seat up to 800 in the hall, contains 250 stadium-style seats in the main space, and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Just as Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Garden and Wembley Stadium are considered their sports’ most aspirational venues by players and fans alike, Esports Arena Las Vegas will be the iconic destination in esports and complement the city’s incredible appeal, attracting video gaming competitors and fans from around the world.”
Last month, the MGM Grand opened a smaller concept at Level Up skill-gaming entertainment lounge. The indoor golf suite, Golfstream has a putting surface and screen for hitting balls that measure driving distance and closest to the pin.

PlayStation Vue & eSports

PlayStation Vue is slated to get its very own, dedicated eSports channel with 24 hours content facility. Along with boosting the still nascent eSports industry and giving it a larger audience, this would also serve to give the players something to do between bouts of game play.

The Electronic Sports League (ESL) said that its EsportsTV will be coming to Sony’s TV streaming service later in the month.

The service launched in Europe last year and has already reached in excess of 5 million households. ESL is one of the largest names in the niche and organizes a whole host of programs including the likes of League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Users will have other options besides Twitch and the like to watch eSports events. With Vue available on PlayStation 4, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, mobile, and other platforms, there will be a host of places where users can easily get hold of all the happenings in the niche.

Smart Phone fingerprint Scanner Not Secure

Snapshotpink8_001

Although , no two people are believed to have identical fingerprints, researchers at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering and Michigan State University College of Engineering have found that partial similarities between prints are common enough that the fingerprint-based security systems used in mobile phones and other electronic devices can be more vulnerable than previously thought. The vulnerability lies in the fact that fingerprint-based authentication systems feature small sensors that do not capture a user’s full fingerprint. Instead, they scan and store partial fingerprints, and many phones allow users to enroll several different fingers in their authentication system. Identity is confirmed when a user’s fingerprint matches any one of the saved partial prints. The researchers hypothesized that there could be enough similarities among different people’s partial prints that one could create a “MasterPrint.”

Team leader Nasir Memon explained that the MasterPrint concept bears is akin to a hacker who attempts to crack a PIN-based system using a commonly adopted password such as 1234.

“About 4 percent of the time, the password 1234 will be correct, which is a relatively high probability when you’re just guessing,” said Memon. The research team set out to see if they could find a MasterPrint that could reveal a similar level of vulnerability. They found that certain attributes in human fingerprint patterns were common enough to raise security concerns.

Researchers say “As fingerprint sensors become smaller in size, it is imperative for the resolution of the sensors to be significantly improved in order for them to capture additional fingerprint features,” Ross said. “If resolution is not improved, the distinctiveness of a user’s fingerprint will be inevitably compromised. The empirical analysis conducted in this research clearly substantiates this.”

Inmates Create Homemade Computer & Stashed it

Snapshotprison dress3_001

Two inmates incarcerated at Marion Correctional Institution, a low-security, 2,500-capacity facility which used inmate labor to recycle old computers as part of the non-profit RET3 program. Both inmates managed to squirrel away dozens of RET3 parts and construct two new machines inside MCI. The fully functional computers were “hidden on a plywood board in the ceiling above a closet” and subsequently “connected to [Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction’s] computer network.”

According to the 50-page Ohio Inspector General report, the fully functional computers were “hidden on a plywood board in the ceiling above a closet” and subsequently “connected to [Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction’s] computer network.” But wait—there’s more. They were able to run ethernet cables through the ceiling and down to the network switch, where it was connected to port 16, and the inmates were able to obtain internet access via credentials belonging to, a retired prison employee who now works for ODRC as a contractor. Once connected, they were able to download articles on “home-made drugs, plastics, explosives, and credit cards.” One of the inmates, according to the report, also “accessed an article online from the Bloomberg.com site detailing how to submit fraudulent tax returns and have the refunds wired to debit cards,” and stole the identity of another inmate and used his name and social security number to apply for five credit cards. The investigators found a bunch of software useful for hacking and encryption, as well as brute force password crackers, an email spamming program, and a Java-based tool used to commit man-in-the-middle attacks. Likely this cornucopia of illicit programs was how the pair were able to issue “passes for inmates to gain access to multiple areas within MCI” and gain access to “unauthorized inmate records including disciplinary records, sentencing data, and inmate locations.

How they were discovered

The two masterminds were caught due to employee bandwidth throttling. An automated message informed MCI staff that on Friday July 3, 2015 “a computer operating through the ODRC computer network had exceeded a daily internet usage threshold.” The ring of prisoners involved with this data heist have been shipped off to other facilities, and MCI are shouldering the blame for not only allowing it to happen, but failing to notify Ohio State Highway Patrol as regulations.

Dag they should do their time (be good) and apply for a computer job

Ford Designs A Baby Crib That Feels Like A Car Ride

natural-hair2_001

It’s dubbed the Max Motor Dreams, and it’s actually a “smart bed” for babies that can simulate the feel of riding in a car — a well-known trick for parents with babies that have difficulty falling asleep. It uses sound, lighting, and motion to mimic the feel of a gentle car ride from the backseat. Ford is running a contest in Spain where one lucky person to test drive the Ford Max vehicle can walk away with the baby bed. Now we just need to hope they smarten up and make an adult-sized version.

You Tube Will No Longer Allow Creators To Make Money Unless ……..

rosegown3_001

Five years ago, YouTube allowed anyone to sign up for the service, start uploading videos, and immediately begin making money. This model helped YouTube grow into the web’s biggest video platform, but it has also led to some problems. People were creating accounts that uploaded content owned by other people, sometimes big record labels or movie studios, sometimes other popular YouTube creators.

YouTube has announced a change to its partner program to try and alleviate some of the bad stuff.  From now on, creators won’t be able to turn on monetization until they hit 10,000 lifetime views on their channel. YouTube believes that this threshold will give them a chance to gather enough information on a channel to know if it’s legit.

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos said on Wednesday he is selling about $1 billion worth of the internet retailer’s stock annually to fund his Blue Origin rocket company, which aims to launch paying passengers on 11-minute space rides beginning 2018.

The interior includes comfortable seats with, laid back headrests like a La-Z-Boy. The walls are padded and white, and there are handles all over the place so that the floating astronauts can hang on like people riding the Metro.

Virgin Galactic, founded by Richard Branson, also plans to fly tourists to space, and is in the middle of testing its new space plane, Space Ship Two, which would be tethered to the bellow of a mother ship and then launched in flight. Virgin charges $250,000 a flight; Blue Origin hasn’t decided what its tickets would cost.

This is so backwards So whats going to transpire is that the uneducated with the cash can fly up in space and the educated scientist who is well versed in astronomy or aerospace only get to hear about it or will they have to apply for a grant or something will have to hear about? Who just want to hear “O the ride was wonderful or exciting! Where the details?

Vault 7 & The Grasshopper

Snapshotwhite10_001

WikiLeaks has published more secret hacking manuals belonging to the US Central Intelligence Agency as part of its Vault7 series of leaks. The site is billing Vault7 as the largest publication of intelligence documents ever.

Friday’s installment includes 27 documents related to “Grasshopper,” the code name for a set of software tools used to build customized malware for Windows-based computers. The Grasshopper framework provides building blocks that can be combined in unique ways to suit the requirements of a given surveillance or intelligence operation. The documents can be useful to potential CIA targets looking for signatures and other signs indicating their Windows systems were hacked. The leak will also prove useful to competing malware developers who want to learn new techniques and best practices.

Artifax- Helping To Save The National Endowment For The Arts

Snapshot_098

There’s a new website that provides citizens a way to get artistic with their political grievances. Artifax allows constituents to fax a work of art to their elected officials, in protest of Trump’s proposal to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts. Artifax is the brainchild of Los Angeles design studio Use All Five, which has worked with clients ranging from UCLA to the Guggenheim.

The site was launched last week featuring work by 20 artists, designers, and studios. Visitors to the website first select a work of art, scroll page down, and enter their zip code. Artifax then pulls up a list of elected officials for that district, and users can send a custom or auto-generated message to the representative of their choice. (You don’t have to print anything—the message is faxed digitally.) Eight days since launch, people some 800 faxes have been sent in total.

SAFR The Female Friendly UBER Alternative

Snapshotbluecoat7_001

Female-friendly alternative to Uber, Safr, launched last month in Boston.  With all the disturbing news concerning Uber and Lyft drivers the timing is just about right for Safr. A new report revealed that thousands of Uber and Lyft drivers in Massachusetts have failed the state’s new background checks,

Safr riders can choose which gender they feel most comfortable riding with via the app—drivers have the same gender preference option—and can also take advantage of a number of built-in safety features, including a feature that can call 911, send a text to a pre-assigned contact, or dial Safr’s 24-hour command center. A color-matching system, which sends riders and drivers a color-coded message during pickups, also helps ensure passengers get into the correct vehicle.

Safr , which are currently all women, go through a more extensive recruitment, vetting, and training process than competitors.

Safr isn’t the first such startup to gear their service toward women. In 2014, New York-based SheTaxis, also known as SheRiders, tried to launch, but faced gender discrimination issues and has since folded. See Jane Go, based in Orange County, California, and conceived of by a father-daughter team worried about rider safety, began operating last September.

German Court Rules for Illegal Downloading- Parents Must Name Their Child Or Else

Snapshotbluecoat5_001

A German court has ruled on a 2011 copyright infringement case and the verdict has disturbing consequences for parents. The ruling found that parents must name their child as the one responsible for downloading a torrent or they will be held responsible for the violation.

A series of recent cases have been defining how Germany’s legal system will handle parents who claim their innocence in illegal file-sharing but are being pursued by copyright claimants. The most recent involve a claim brought by Universal Music Group regarding the illegal downloading of Rihanna’s 2011 album Loud. The parents received a notice from Universal demanding payment. The parents said they weren’t really fans of Ri-Ri but one of their three children was responsible. They had no intention of snitching on their own kid and took their case to court.

In October 2016, the same court had to review a similar case in which a man denied pirating files and named his wife as a co-user of the household broadband connection. He refused to provide details his wife’s browsing habits and successfully argued that under German law citizens are protected from violating the privacy of their family.

However, this week’s verdict turned out with a different twist. The parents were found liable for the child’s torrenting and ordered to pay €3,879.80 ($4,137.61) in fines. The court chairman, Wolfgang Büscher, argued that this case “is not comparable” to the one from October because the child had admitted everything to their parents. Since the parents had admitted that they knew which child was responsible but refused to give a name they will have to “bear the corresponding disadvantages.”

This a blow to the parents of torrent-happy children across Germany and follows on the heels of a similar case from earlier in March. In those proceedings, a father claimed that his 11-year-old son had downloaded a book that was the subject of a copyright complaint. He explained that he had warned his son not to “download random things or do anything dangerous,” The judge ruled that the father would have to be held responsible.

Germany is considered one the best countries in the world for internet freedom and the protection of privacy, but very  strict when it comes to the enforcement of copyright

In those proceedings, a father claimed that his 11-year-old son had downloaded a book that was the subject of a copyright complaint. He explained that he had warned his son not to “download random things or do anything dangerous,” according to Torrent Freak. A judge ruled that the father is responsible for the download because he is required to “instruct a child on the illegality of participating in illegal file-sharing exchanges, and to explicitly prohibit this behavior.”

Gotta Smart TV? Well It Could Be Hacked

blacktop2_001

Security consultant Rafael Scheel of Oneconsult AG  demonstrated the attack by using a cheap transmitter to embed malicious commands into a rogue TV signal. When that signal is broadcast to devices in the vicinity, it can gain access to the televisions. What can cause the attack is the exploitation of two documented security flaws in the Web browsers that run in the background of the TV models used in the test, both manufactured by Samsung. This can work on other TV sets as well. Once a hacker has control over theSmart TV, the TV could be used to attack further devices in the home network or to spy on the user with the TV’s camera and microphone
