I SPY BOOKS

Snapshotpinkand grey2_001

Prior to digital surveillance and the government’s Snooper’s Charter, it was much harder for the state to spy on its citizens.
Without the technology we have today, the government relied on manpower, specifically from society’s most innocent members – minors. Children in the UK especially were much easier to manipulate.
I-Spy books were subsequently published by the state and given as gifts, as well as distributed to schools, youth clubs and infant terror organizations . The books transformed the act of surveillance into play, encouraging children to routinely observe and record the actions, speech and private correspondence of people who the government deemed to be enemies of society. The completed books even prompted children to spy on themselves, which many found difficult, even with the mirrors provided.
Each completed book was sent to a local government councillor whose job it was to forward the data to the relevant renditions team, and also to decide if any compensation was due to the child; for example, if the surveillance data they had submitted led to the arrest and execution of a parent.

Defense company Raytheon has teamed up with The Smallpeice Trust and several major security bodies to locate Britain’s most talented hackers in a 720-school competition. Four pupils from the Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education were named the new Cyber Security Challenge Schools champions at Cyber Games 2.0 in Cheltenham last week. The 14-17 year-olds were given the task of cracking encoded systems and freeing a hostage trapped within a secret location in Cheltenham College.

The  Cyber Security Challenge Schools Programme, now in its second year, is funded by the Cabinet Office, and delivered in association with Bletchley Park, CompTIA, eskills UK and others.

James Jackson, programme leader for Computing at the Grimsby Institute said the Institute’s students are actually more familiar with hardware-based tasks.

Vincent Blake, head of cyber at Ratheon, says that the firm’s ambition is to “instil the seed of cyber creativity within each of the participants”.

Drivers Warned Against Google Glass While Driving

The Explorer Edition of Google's augmented reality head mounted display Google Glass

Drivers using the “wearable computer” device Google Glass while at the wheel will be in violation of the law.

Worn as glasses, Google Glass has a small screen just above the right eye and users can take a picture, record a video and read messages. The device is expected to go on sale next year.

In March 2013, Google picked 8,000 people from the USA to begin testing the technology, but the Department for Transport warned today that when the devices arrive in the UK anyone using them while driving could be prosecuted for careless driving.

A statement said: “It is important that drivers give their full attention when they are behind the wheel and do not behave in a way that stops them from observing what is happening on the road.

“A range of offences and penalties already exist to tackle those drivers who do not pay proper attention to the road, including careless driving which will soon become a fixed penalty offence.

“We are aware of the impending rollout of Google Glass and are in discussion with the police to ensure that individuals do not use this technology while driving.”
